The cycle Bekenntnisse (Confessions) contains two pieces which plumb the shadow regions of human existence on a very personal level: Aufschrei (Scream) deals with artistic inspiration perceived as a burden: shrill, tortured screams, hard second superimpositions, glissandi and the absence of a tonal center give distinction to the musical language characterized by extreme expression. Stunde in die Nacht (Hour into the Night) paints the dark scene of approaching death with reverberant sounds, a continuous circling of the melodic lines, dissonant imitations as well as a free rhythmic structure.
